The Isle of Berk was once a place where Vikings fought dragons day and night. But then, a young dreamer named Hiccup trained the dragon Toothless, befriended him, and most importantly, showed everyone that humans and dragons could live in harmony.

Five years have passed, and Berk has transformed into a dragon paradise where humans and dragons respect and care for one another. Hiccup's best friend, Astrid, is the star of the popular dragon races, easily beating the other Viking teenagers, while Hiccup prefers solitary scenic flights with Toothless, charting unknown territories and discovering new worlds and new dragons.
One of their adventures leads them to a hard-to-reach ice cave, which is home to hundreds of unknown wild dragons. Here they also meet the mysterious Dragon Rider, who turns out to be Hiccup's long-lost mother, Valka. But there's no time for a loving reunion between mother and son, as dark clouds gather over the coexistence of humans and dragons. These clouds are brought by Drago, a power-hungry, self-proclaimed "dragon god" served by the arrogant dragon trapper, Eret. These two pose a threat that Hiccup and Toothless cannot face alone, so they reassemble the old gang, which, besides Astrid, includes Gobber, Snotlout, Fishlegs, and the twins Tuffnut and Ruffnut. However, Hiccup's father, the Viking chief Stoick the Vast, and especially his mother, Valka, will also have to stand up to the powerful enemy. Teaching this mismatched group to pull together will be incredibly difficult. But without it, the inhabitants of Berk won't stand a chance.
