How I won the war

An immortal war novel in which perhaps only the protagonist, British Allied Army Lieutenant Ernest Goodbody, takes the war seriously. Don Quixote's honest accountant, Goodbody, by a series of comical coincidences, and through his efforts to obey all regulations and maintain unwavering morale, rises up the military ranks. We follow him first on training in Great Britain, then on the North African battlefield, then on the southern front in Italy, in rebel Greece and finally on the western front in Nazi Germany. The fate of Officer Goodbody and his company is a picture of the absurdity of war, which itself is a hopelessly ridiculous affair. The novel became the basis for the film of the same name starring John Lennon.
