Jascalevich Diego, Hába Quartett: Viene Clareando - CD

Charango - this fascinating stringed instrument from the central South American Andes is known to us primarily as a harmonic and rhythmic musical instrument. The tuning of its five double strings reveals the instrument's affinity with the Spanish Baroque guitar and the Spanish vihuela, which arrived on the Altiplano, the vast mountain plateau between the eastern and western Andes, with the soldiers of the Spanish conquistadors in the 16th century. Soon, the first replicas of these Iberian stringed instruments appeared - first in Bolivia - and the charango was born. The most striking difference between the charango and its southern European predecessors is its resonant body, for which Bolivian instrument makers used the hard shell of the armadillo. Today, this then newly developed, robust and tonally surprisingly penetrating stringed instrument is the most important accompanying musical instrument in the folklore of the South American Andes.

However, Diego Jascalevich did not want to settle for a supporting role for his charango in the music scene. The Buenos Aires-born guitarist, singer and composer came to Europe via the Brazilian music mecca, Salvador de Bahia. He gradually developed new playing techniques for the charango, studied classical guitar and composition. He has also performed regularly on stage with various classical, jazz and folk ensembles. The list of his musical partners is impressive. He ranges from jazz guitarist Toto Blanke to Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli to Japanese Koto player Tomoko Kiharu. In the hands of Diego Jascalevich, the charango has long since shed its role as an accompaniment instrument and matured into a full-fledged solo instrument.
