John Coltrane: Coltrane LTD

LP Record When I wrote about John Coltrane on the back of Mating Call, I took into account his previous experiences playing with Eddie Vinson, Dizzy Gillespie, Earl Bostic, Johnny Hodges and Miles Davis. I wrote, “It is evident from his employment record that he didn't just burst full-blown onto the scene. Rather, these are dues he has been paying for some time.” This is an age of the big build-up. Film stars, television personalities, presidential candidates, soaps for use in washing machines; all are sold to the public in the same manner. With the advent of hi-fi, the LP boom and Madison Avenue's discovery of 'jazz', musicians are also receiving similar treatment. Every other month, we are greeted by albums from new stars.
