Jošt: Shadows of Brünburg

Not every hero wants to be the chosen one…

Welcome to Brünburg, the prestigious lyceum for aspiring mages. Jošt Vaněvski, son of the great war heroes, is about to enrol. But the more famous his parents are, the more Jošt tries to be invisible. He has no desire to become a great mage, doubts his own abilities, and doesn't want to go to Brünburg at all.
However, in a castle full of winding corridors, ghosts, and strange artefacts, he soon makes friends – his classmate Bruno and his cousin Rézi. And also the ghost of Marcel, who teaches him spells that first-years don't normally learn. But why did the former warlock choose Jošt? And are his intentions really as pure as he claims?
Meanwhile, emerald jewellery is mysteriously disappearing from an antique shop in Ehzeln. What at first looked like a series of strange robberies is turning into a complex crime, and Chief Magister, Jošt's father Alexej, is called in to investigate. The clues reveal ancient wrongs and, to Alexej's horror, lead to Jošt at Brünburg.

Anna Kouřilová

Anna Kouřilová

Anna Kouřilová was born in Brno, but spent most of her life in a picturesque South Moravian village, surrounded by fields, forests, and vineyards. She inherited her passion for writing and her typewriter from her grandmother, to whom she dictated her first fairy tales before she even learned to read. At grammar school, she was more interested in the natural sciences than literature – yet she still managed to write and direct two plays, read most of the fantasy section in the local library, and entertain her classmates with her own stories. During her studies at the Faculty of Medicine in Brno, she started earning extra money as a medical copywriter and, after completing her education, wrote her first book during her maternity leave. She now works as a general practitioner and, besides writing, enjoys amateur theatre, scouting, and collecting and reading comics. In her writing, she is often inspired by the works of T. Pratchett and A. Sapkowski. Her favourite book is Inkheart by C. Funke.

Jiří Kouřil

Jiří Kouřil was born in 1997 in Kyjov and spent his youth in the shadow of a fairytale castle, which was occasionally visited by a dragon, a warlock in a spectral carriage, or a film crew. To escape this idyllic setting, he went to study in the realm of absurdity, cynicism, and double entendres known as Brno. There, he channelled his love of maps into studying geography and later agroecology. He has enjoyed stories (whether in the form of books, films, or comics) since he was a child, but eventually discovered that the most interesting ones are hidden in history – both human and natural. That is why he strives to make his stories grow from a believable world. After all, he was literary-weaned on Knaak and Sapkowski. In the wild, he is most often spotted flying a drone over the fields of Haná, staring into dark corners straight out of a Mike Mignola drawing, and drooling over the premiere of the latest Wes Anderson film.
