Kendrick Lamar: To Pimp A Butterfly (2015) (2x LP) – LP

"To Pimp a Butterfly" is the third studio album and the second major label release by American rapper Kendrick Lamar. Recorded with Top Dawg Entertainment and Aftermath Entertainment, the album was released on 16 March 2015. Compared to his previous work, this record incorporates elements of funk and free jazz.

At the beginning of 2014, Kendrick Lamar announced plans for his third studio album. Over the course of the year, he recorded around forty new songs, collaborating with producers such as Dr. Dre, Tae Beast, and Sounwave. He also stated that he did not let the success of his previous album influence his creative process for this record.

During the summer of 2014, he recorded several tracks with producer Flying Lotus. One of their collaborations, "Never Catch Me", was released as a single for the producer's album You're Dead. Ultimately, only their joint track "Wesley's Theory" made it onto this album.

In September 2014, he claimed that the new album would feature no guest artists. This ultimately did not prove to be the case.

On 10 March 2015, he announced the album title To Pimp a Butterfly and revealed the cover art via Twitter and Instagram. The title references the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by American author Harper Lee. In a later interview, Kendrick Lamar stated that the original title was meant to be Tu Pimp A Caterpillar, with the initials spelling out the name Tupac (referencing rapper Tupac Shakur). He later changed the title, explaining that the new name symbolises using his fame for a good cause and refusing to be exploited (pimped) by music industry executives.

Kendrick Lamar (born 17 June 1987, Compton, California, USA) is an American rapper and two-time Grammy Award winner. He is a member of the group Black Hippy, alongside three other West Coast rappers: Jay Rock, Schoolboy Q, and Ab-Soul.
In 2011, he released the critically acclaimed independent album Section.80, which secured him a contract with Dr. Dre's label Aftermath Entertainment. Dr. Dre then helped him create his debut album good kid, m. A. A. d city, which was released in October 2012.
