Kim Chiyong (year 82)

We all know a Kim Chi-yong... The character of Kim Chi-yong, an ordinary woman in her thirties, is familiar to Korean readers - and especially to female readers. The author does not have to make any special effort to make her story believable, because the individual episodes of her life are part of the general everyday life and shared experience. The choice of the name itself is symbolic: Chiyong is reportedly the most common first name given to Korean girls in 1982. Thus, almost everyone knows a "Kim Chi-yong" in their neighbourhood, who from early childhood through her school years and later in marriage and employment has gradually experienced petty abuse, harassment and blatant discrimination. One day, however, the protagonist begins to speak in different voices. In the voice of her friend, her mother... Her husband arranges for her to see a psychiatrist and she tells him her story, which is also the story of all Korean women. Before the denouement of each story, we usually already have a subconscious sense of what will follow, even though we might prefer to be wrong. However, the social reality based on traditional values and attitudes is chilling and unrelenting in this regard.
