Kratochvíl Martin, Jana Koubková: Text & Dreaming - CD
Everyone was pretty tired after a day of film music shooting in Budíkov. Joe after a long journey from Berlin, Tony came from somewhere in the north, where he now lives. Jana also had a sore leg and was not much into singing, rather she was looking for a pill to relieve the pain. Even alcohol didn't help. It was a long winter evening on November 29, 2018. I don't know who, probably Joe, mumbled something like why don't we stop now that we were having such a hard time getting together, and asked Matej in the director's chair to turn off the light and turn on the red light. It didn't meet with any very positive response, but somehow it got started. I can't report much more about it, because I fell into a kind of tired trance and strange relaxation, when nothing really matters, the agreed recording for the film is over and we just play something completely but casually. "Easy and don't push it," Jana announced and it was on. Eight songs fell out of us, each inspired by (and credited to) the one who started it, who laid down the first notes and established the mood and feeling. Then the music lay there for a long time and I almost forgot about it. When I played it after a while, it was like I didn't believe I had anything to do with it at all, at times I didn't even believe I was playing it myself. That's how the others I sent the recordings to felt. At first I thought about editing and shortening them somehow, but every attempt to interfere with the music made me feel like a violent interruption of the dreamlike flow. After about a year, I asked all my teammates to consider publishing again. Jana and Joe were both in favour, Tony wrote that every other CD should be a strong authorial and interpretative work and that he would rather not recommend the release. It took a while to convince him that this IS the right music, the essence of playfulness and tonal and rhythmic freedom. This is the encounter with the transcendent that music can convey. Let the critics define what genre it is. I don't know, but it's pure music, the best we could play in the dark studio in Budíkov without much thinking and inventing. Judge for yourself.
