Kreutzer Sonata
The Kreutzer Sonata is a masterful novella about the unhappy breakdown of a marriage. In a train compartment during a long journey, various people meet and start talking. Gradually, a heated debate about marriage and divorce ensues. Only a young man with conspicuously white hair remains aloof, as if unwilling to comment on the topic. When he finally joins the debate with the opinion that love does not exist and is merely a sensory intoxication, he confesses to being Pozdnyshev, the man who killed his own wife. He gradually reveals his story of romantic infatuation, marriage, and the first disillusionment of an unhappy marriage full of arguments and despair, which gradually led to tragedy. When the novella was published in 1889, it caused a complete sensation. The tragic story of a couple who once loved each other passionately but ended up making each other's lives bitter continues to attract readers to this day.
