Kryl Karel: Brother, Close the Door - LP

The music that became a symbol of 1989.

Unforgettable songs on a landmark album!

"Bratříčku, zavírej vrátka" (Little Brother, Close the Gate) is the name of Karel Kryl's first LP record from 1969.
Besides its undeniable musical, vocal, and poetic quality, Bratříček also became a symbol of the social context surrounding 1968 and the years that followed. Fate granted Karel Kryl only a very brief period of live contact with his Czech and Slovak audiences, and this album was limited to just its first pressing before being banned after Kryl emigrated in the autumn of 1969.

The singer's subsequent work abroad, in the form of smuggled LPs and cassettes plus radio broadcasts, had a significant unofficial impact, but the songs from Bratříček became the most powerful part of our lives.

Each of these titles evokes a story, a memory, singing at home, around a campfire, on the river—anywhere an informer wasn't lurking nearby. The title track, as well as Salome, His Majesty the Executioner, Angel, Pieta, The Song of the Unknown Soldier, or Morituri te salutant became hymns of quiet defiance, a repertoire for all with the ability to sing, play—and understand them.
