Ku Klux Klan, this is where love lives
The Past and Present of the Terrifying White Hood
“If even a single drop of another colour gets into the white icing, it will never be snow-white again. It’s the same with people.”
This is how the queen of the Ku Klux Klan teaches young children how to properly prepare a Christmas cake. What exactly is the Ku Klux Klan, and how is it possible that ideas that don't belong in the 21st century are still alive and thriving? The terrifying images of burning torches and white robes are not from the Middle Ages; they are a message from today. Polish reporter Katarzyna Surmiak-Domańska seeks the answer at a Ku Klux Klan convention in the state of Arkansas, where she examines this extremist organisation up close. It was here that this “white organisation” was born one hundred and fifty years ago, here that postcards commemorating the lynchings of African Americans were published, and it is here that even today you can encounter figures in the woods, shrouded in white hoods and carrying torches.
