In the spring of 1944, a new teacher arrives at the small school in Lověšice, a little railway village near Přerov. For Petr Skála, the country school means getting to know not only the children but also their parents – especially the widow Lota Kiliánová, mother of eight-year-old Helenka. Their budding relationship, as well as Helenka's gentle childhood world and the loving environment of her home, clash with the brutal reality of the war and post-war days…
