Ladislav Smoček: Maze

"Attempted interview outside the entrance", as the author himself described his play in the subtitle, grows out of an encounter with a bitter janitor, guarding the entrance to the maze and allowing visitors only inside, with a man, who separates himself from the obedient herd of newcomers and begins to question the laws of the maze and its meaning. Doorman, to whom the Authority is granting a small, but undeniable power, becomes the materialization of its own function with all its smugness, with a blunt importance and a menacing aggressiveness, with which he eventually drives the insistent visitor into the bowels of the labyrinth. And the maze itself ceases to appear as a harmless attraction and gradually transforms right before our eyes into a dangerous space from which there is no escape and which, whether one wants to or not, will eventually swallow one up. The director Ivan Chrze's reflections on the radio production of The Maze led him to the unique casting of the central pair - for the role of the porter he got Michal Pavlata and for the man Ivan Trojan. Other roles will be played by Naďa Konvalinková, Květa Fialová, Andrea Elsnerová and many others.
