At the scrap yard of the Kladno steelworks, which has become a work camp for those which the communist society had thrown to the very edge of itself, and here it intended to remake them in its own image "like the steel", the prosecutor met, that he didn't want to understand, that law should be subordinated to the political aims of totalitarian power, Adventist, refusing to go to work on Saturday, philosopher, unwilling to squeeze their thinking into new lectures, saxophonist, whose instrument has been condemned as a bourgeois relic, tradesman and many others.
And despite the fact that, dressed in old rags, they have lost their original lives, they seem happier and more content than those who sent them here.

The film, which satirized the political repression of the 1950s, went into the vault for twenty years immediately after its completion. The premiere of The Larks on a String was not made until 1990.

Digital restoration of this film from the gift of Mrs. Milada Kučerová and Mr. Eduard Kučera was realized by the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in cooperation with the National Film Archive and the State Cinematography Fund in the companies UPP and Soundsquare in 2021. The film was digitally restored using the outputs of the NAKI project DF13P01OVV006 Methodology of Digitization of the National Film Fund.
