Fiddler Valenta is a drunkard. He lives with his three daughters in great poverty. After an argument with her drunken father, the eldest daughter, Rozárka, decides to leave with her sisters for their aunt's in Prague, and the abandoned father sets their house on fire. Rozárka becomes the suspect for the arson, and in an attempt to protect her father, she takes the blame.
The film adaptation differs from the source material, especially in its ending. At the time (and later), it was unacceptable for everyone to go to America to find happiness. František Kožík therefore modified the ending. Otakar Jeremiáš won the National Prize in 1941 for his music for the film.
