Lincoln Highway
In June 1954, eighteen-year-old Emmett Watson returns to Nebraska. He is driven home by the warden of the juvenile work farm where the young man has just served a year for involuntary manslaughter. After his father's recent death, the family farm was repossessed by the bank, so Emmett has a clear plan: take his eight-year-old brother, Billy, and start a new life out West. But when the warden leaves, Emmett discovers that two of his friends have escaped from the work farm and secretly travelled with him, hidden in the boot of the car. And they have a completely different idea of what the near future holds… Towles' third novel, like his previous books Rules of Civility and A Gentleman in Moscow, is characterised by its strong atmosphere. Thanks to its original narrative style and colourful characters, often reminiscent of the heroes of Mark Twain's books, it is sure to delight even the most discerning readers.
