Lotus slippers

China in the late 19th century is a world of traditions, strict hierarchies and harsh restrictions, especially for women. Here the fates of two girls from different worlds begin to intertwine. Lin Jing grows up surrounded by wealth and privilege, but also strict rules. Flower, her maid and slave, has known only hard work and humiliation since childhood. Their relationship is full of contradictions - friendship and rivalry, dependence and bitterness. How their lives are changing dramatically, both women are finding out that their fates are not in the hands of men alone, but it's primarily their own choices, that can destroy more than just themselves, but so are you, they care about. Jane Yang describes a world where traditions hide deep cruelty and where women often fight not only against an unjust system, but also against each other. Above all, however, The Lotus Shoes is a profound and remarkable story about determination, courage, truth and love, about values that make sense always and everywhere.
