Lu Eric: Schubert: Piano Sonatas D. 784 & D. 959 - Allegretto D.915 - CD

Although Chinese-American pianist Eric Lu (although born in Massachusetts, USA, he lists himself as such on his website, given the origins of both parents) is only 24 this year, he already boasts a highly successful concert and recording career. His promising beginnings were definitively confirmed by winning the prestigious International Piano Competition in Leeds, England, in 2018, and since then he has managed to build a very good reputation and secure an exclusive contract with Warner Classics. Already his first recording with a programme consisting of works by Chopin, Schumann and Brahms received a positive critical response. Currently he is coming out with an album dedicated exclusively to Schubert, resp. his two perhaps greatest piano sonatas: nr. 13 in A minor "Grande Sonate" (D. 784) from 1823 and five years younger sonata no. 19 in A major (D. 959). Among these essential works he inserted the composer's smaller Alegretto in C minor (D. 915) of 1827, which proved to be a good programmatic choice. Eric Lu is clearly very close to Schubert, describing him as his favourite composer, whose music moves him the most. The emotional charge combined with technical precision are also the greatest strengths of this recording.
