Marriage on Credit - DVD
Another successful adaptation of a novel starring Zita Kabátová, originally published in Hvězda, was Marie Blažková's The Lower Tones. For the film, the title was updated as Marriage on Credit and transferred from Ostrava to Prague. In addition to Kabátová, he also brought Eva Gerová, who was only sixteen years old, and Vera Ferbasová, who became more popular every year. This time the story focused on the love life of sisters Lea and Emma Pohl and the comic escapades of Kristýna Žitná, Emma's classmate. The favorable response and interest of the public kept the film in constant attention throughout the winter season of 1936/1937.
After the major success of The Light of His Eyes, Marriage on Credit became the second film starring Zita Kabátová to be based on a sequel to the novel. This time, too, Hvězda held a competition during the publication of Bottom Tones, as the original title of Marie Blažková's novel was. In this case, however, the prizes were not so attractive and the readers were only supposed to recognize the future cast by their silhouettes. Antonín Novotný, who had been her partner in Lojzička (1936), reappeared alongside Zita Kabátová. The new face was Eva Gerová, a sixteen-year-old conservatory student, a discovery of director Oldřich Kmínek. However, the film's greatest popularity came from Věra Ferbasová as a mischievous student in love with her physics professor. In the German language environment, the film became known as Die Ehe auf Kredit.
