Marta doesn't want children

Can a trip to Santiago change a person's life, or will they go back to where they came from?

Nothing bad is happening to Martha. She has a good job, is in a long-term relationship with Hynek and likes his children from a previous marriage. He doesn't want any children of his own, and Hynek doesn't want any more, they agree on that. So what does it actually solve? Why does she decide to go alone on a ten-day journey full of discomfort and loneliness when she should have gone to the sea with Hynek and the children? Are her loved ones right to think that this is nonsense and all - that Marta should live a completely different life?
Petra Soukupová once again brilliantly explores the psyche of the female protagonist, who finds herself at a point where she has to deal not only with her own life, but also with the expectations of her surroundings. Martha's narrative is intertwined with the views and perspectives of her relatives and friends, and the novel opens up questions about the extent to which our ideas of happiness are shaped by the pressures of those around us. And also whether we can recognize the moment when we can still decide our own future and when it is already dominated by the certainties of the past and social conventions.
