Martyr
The second installment of the gritty and ruthless A Covenant of Steel trilogy from epic fantasy master Anthony Ryan
Alwyn the Scrivener wakes up under the rustling canopy of trees, which always calms him down when he is tasked with killing someone. This time, however, Alwyn returns to Shavin Forest not as a bandit, but as a scribe and indispensable advisor to the Chosen Lady Evadine Courlain. And on top of that, with a terrible headache.
The gripping plot of the second installment of the Steel Covenant series takes Evadine, Alwyn, and the entire company across Albermaine and south to Alundia. Are they really there just to pacify the rebellious nobility and protect the orthodox pilgrims, or has the king sent them there to their deaths to get rid of the inconvenient martyr who refuses to die? In spectacular battles, Alwyn must prove that he is not only an obedient soldier, but also a good commander and strategist.
The dangerous balancing act between the crown and the Covenant eventually leads Alwyn even further south into the uncharted Caerith Wastes, where he uncovers the terrifying secret of the first Scourge and the mysterious book he received from the Bag Witch.

They wrote about the book:
Anthony Ryan' s latest series proves once again how easily this author can win over readers with his characters. Alwyn is definitely not a positive hero — he does get his fill of those who are even bigger monsters or psychopaths, but for most of the book he is consistently true to his cynical view of life and the world.
