Meyer's glass

A novel from the Šumava region by the winner of the Book Club Literary Award.

A few days after the invasion in August 1968, a Soviet military delegation announced a visit to the glassworks in Vimperk. The officers want to see the glass that was sent to Catherine the Great and to establish friendly relations with the Communist workers. At the last moment, however, one of the local glassmakers understands the purpose of the brother's visit and hides the precious glass in a place where no one would look for it...

The story of the search for this treasure can also be read as the story of the Šumava glass industry, which since its pre-war victories at world exhibitions has been completely bankrupted as a result of the socialist economy and subsequent privatisation.
