Mia Madre

Direct your own life

Margherita is a director in the middle of shooting a rather unoriginal social drama about a factory rebellion. Besides the trouble with her actors, especially the insufferably self-centred Italian-American star Barry Huggins (John Turturro), Margherita is also going through a severe personal crisis – her mother is dying. The filmmaker finds herself in an internal struggle, directing not only her film but, more importantly, her own life. She ends up doubting everything, everyone, and above all, herself. Are the consequences of her own selfish decisions catching up with her?
