Mistborn I.: Final Empire
If you can't kill or capture a tyrant, you have no choice but to end his regime...
In a world shrouded in ash that has been falling daily on the heads of all its inhabitants for over a thousand years, the mighty Final Empire, with its capital Luthadel, is home to the immortal Lord Ruler, the most powerful noble families and a Ministry full of haughty bureaucrats and dreaded Inquisitors. The wealth of these elites grew out of the inhuman suffering and slave labor of the Scouts, who finally decided to rise up against the greedy mocipans. Their hopes are pinned on the famous robber Kelsier, who has discovered an exceptionally strong ability of allomancy and is the only known neurotic mystborn who can draw unusual power from the intimate burning of various metals. Or to influence others. To a lesser extent, his fellow Mistings have similar talents, and with their help he intends to help the Skaat rebels overthrow the tyranny. However, even they are unaware of the role played in his bold plans by a young thief, Vin, whose talent Kelsier has discovered is unique to the Mistborn, and so he unexpectedly recruits her into his gang of experienced thieves. A grand adventure epic is about to begin, with no shortage of suspense, intrigue, unexpected twists and turns, and rough banter...
The first volume of an award-winning fantasy saga that features an innovative take on magic in an original world shrouded in fog and ash.

The author has created a fascinating world here that deserves a sequel.

Mistborn is indeed an unusual story. At least initially, it's more akin to Danny's Partners with a bit of magic than, say, Lord of the Rings, and for readers of more classic fantasy, it's a guaranteed refresher.
