Society in the Czech Lands (1770-1918)
The book is devoted to the social and political history of the Czech lands from the end of the 18th century to the establishment of the First Czechoslovak Republic. In the opening chapters, the author examines the impact of Enlightenment thought on the transformation of urban and rural society and the gradual social changes in the pre-March period. In the key parts of the book, he emphasizes the development of civil society, the gradual penetration of liberalism into politics and into mainstream conservative thought. Along with this, it traces the development of Czech, but also German national and cultural awareness, with an emphasis on its impact on economic and political issues of everyday life. The topics of the workers' question and women's emancipation are not left aside. He sees a fundamental role in the process of modernization of society in the activities of public intellectuals who determined social discourse and formulated new ambitions for Czech society.
