Motivational elements in working with the elderly

The uniqueness of this publication lies in its comprehensive view of the problems that come with advancing age. A holistic view guides the entire book. Both the practical advice and the solutions to the ethical problems addressed by the authors can be helpful to nursing staff in both the health and social spheres. The authors have been working with older people for more than 20 years and thanks to their rich experience they were able to enrich the text with their own case studies. The book aims to find the diverse motivations of individuals with mobility and cognitive impairments and the appropriate methods to discover the hidden inner forces that are necessary to maintain quality of life. Much attention is paid to the art of professional communication with the elderly. The authors discuss communication habits and also focus on techniques and examples of conversations with people with dementia, visual and hearing impairment. There is also an assessment of the current senior issues from a psychosocial perspective and a search for possible ways to accept changes in old age. Although it was not the original intention, the book also includes theoretical essays based on many years of research. They can make it easier to understand the changes that occur with age. The authors also reminded the importance of the family from a historical and modern perspective and its influence on the life and care of the elderly. In the appendix, they offered a series of tests that improve the assessment of the current situation of the elderly and allow to better draw up an individual care plan or direct its focus.
