Multimorbidity in clinical practice

This monograph by an experienced team of authors provides a comprehensive view of the polymorbid patient from both a general perspective and from the perspective of individual specialities (primary care, intensive care medicine, geriatrics, internal medicine disciplines, surgery and others). The issue of multimorbidity and the related polypharmacotherapy is and will be the daily bread of general practitioners and internists in particular, but also of all other specialisations.

The publication's dominant focus is on geriatric patients with all their specific characteristics (frailty, loss of self-sufficiency, changes in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, risk of falls), but the issue of polymorbidity also affects younger patients, where the situation is often different – they are usually in better overall condition and more self-sufficient. The treatment of both groups of patients has its pitfalls; in clinical practice it is necessary to avoid polypragmasy and to keep only those drugs in treatment that have been shown to improve the prognosis. Polypragmasy increases the risk of drug interactions and reduces the patient's willingness to take the medication.

In principle, it is not possible to provide an unambiguous guide on how to care for a polymorbid patient. At a time of an almost ubiquitous abundance of available information, the authors have come up with a monograph that fills a gap in the market. It provides the most important recommendations for diagnosis and treatment in various specialisations.
With its broad scope, the book is intended for general practitioners, internists and other specialists.
