A crime drama set in a contemporary village
The series Murder Like a Fairy Tale is set in the present day in a village setting. "I wanted to somehow explore the Czech countryside and its spiritual dimension," explains writer and director Petr Vodička, who as usual approached the story with humour and exaggeration. "In the countryside I sometimes encounter a strange roughness, but also a kindness and a greater depth of connection with nature, which can have a rough dimension. I just feel that there's a depth there, both light and dark, and it makes me curious."
The investigation is led by Captain Bernard (Viktor Preiss) and Lieutenant Bejček (Martin Písařík). "Bernard is a haunted experienced crime writer with a penchant for art and also a writer himself, which actually forms a kind of stylistic framework for the series in the form of narrative inputs from this amateur writer," Vodička adds. "The other is a young, energetic, perhaps a little naive policeman. They complement each other well and, in keeping with the theme, create an almost fairy-tale pairing, as they recall the old wizard and his apprentice."
