My Mount Everest
What you do not give up in your heart is saved
I'm Monika, a princess with a silver spoon and an ordinary girl from Moravia. I'm not a mountaineer. I dreamt of an expedition to Mount Everest my whole life, and I trained and saved up for ten years. I stood on the summit, but the journey was much more important—both to the mountain and to myself. I'm not healthy; sometimes I'm a patient in hospital and sometimes I can't get out of bed for the pain. I know that each of us has our own painful story. But that pain can be transformed into inner strength—and with it, we can work miracles. And this is my story.
Monika Benešová
Monika Benešová comes from Brno and grew up in the Vysočina region. In 2016, she experienced serious health complications, which she continues to battle to this day. In the same year, she completed the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela on her own. A few months later, she conquered the Pacific Crest Trail, a 4,300 km trek through the wilderness of North America. She recorded her experience in the bestseller *My Pacific Crest Trail*. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she worked as a volunteer in Beirut, Lebanon, where she nearly lost her life in the 2020 explosion, and subsequently helped in COVID wards. In the spring of 2024, she fulfilled her lifelong dream and climbed to the summit of Mount Everest.
