My year 1950
The year 1950 can certainly not be described as the most joyous. Political processes are at their peak, the Cold War is in full swing. Most goods are still on ration and contacts with the world are waning. Still, there are happy moments. For example, where a new member has joined the family... Let's see what kind of world they have opened their eyes to. Sculptor Švec is working on a monumental statue of J. IN. Stalin, but Prime Minister Antonín Zápotocký still laid a wreath at the grave of TGM in Lány and spoke to the "believing Czechoslovak people" at Velehrad. A hunt for spies erupts on both sides of the Iron Curtain and war breaks out in Korea. In the summer, Milada Horáková is executed, even though Albert Einstein is asking for clemency for her, and the names of private companies are slowly disappearing from the signboards. People are getting used to names like Pramen, Vitana or Kovomat. Yet even in such dramatic times, people go to the cinema and on dates, play football, cook, visit cafes and pubs and dream their little and big dreams. In short - they live their ordinary lives. The Prague Zoo opens a new monkey pavilion, a UFO flies over Arkansas, and Dalamans are being made again. So join us as we reflect on one of the darker years of the twentieth century, the year the first television remote control is launched in the US, the year Annapurna is first climbed and a senator elected from the Democratic Party of the Ivory Coast is eaten by his constituents...
