My year 1966

This year is full of momentous events. The Czechoslovak New Wave is celebrating its successes: Obchod na korze (The Shop on Main Street) wins the country's first Oscar, and Ostře sledované vlaky (Closely Watched Trains) premieres in cinemas, winning a golden statuette two years later. The Bratislavská lýra song festival is founded, along with the Dívka roku (Girl of the Year) beauty pageant. Construction of the Prague Metro begins, the Šumperák family house is a novelty, LSD is officially used in psychiatry, and censorship watches over everything. In the wider world, the USSR and the USA compete in the space race, and the FIFA World Cup in England is won (for the first and so far, last time) by the home team.
