Czechs live in their own little world – with family, friends, at their cottages and in pubs – while outside, the grey normalcy of the Communist era reigns. Yet the first signs of change are emerging: Mikhail Gorbachev brings the winds of glasnost and perestroika. But in April, the explosion at Chernobyl changes the lives of millions. However, 1986 isn't just about tragedies: Mariánské Lázně gets its Singing Fountain, the film My Sweet Little Village premieres, Maradona shocks the football world, the Channel Tunnel project is born – and the hope for change can no longer be stopped.
