Mysterious victim
Can Kate and Tristan find out what happened to poor Janey, or will she remain lost in time forever?
In 1988, schoolgirl Janey Macklin disappeared from a poor London neighbourhood. Her body was never found and the case remained unsolved. Now, thirty years later, private detectives Kate Marshall and Tristan Harper are approached by a creative agency that wants to turn Janey's disappearance into a true crime podcast, among other things, and they pose an interesting question to Kate and Tristan: Is it possible that Janey was killed by Peter Conway, known as the Nine Elms Cannibal? The old, high-profile cold case would be an extremely lucrative job for Kate, but it would also bring to light a complicated past that she would rather forget. Nevertheless, they plunge into the search for young Janey's fate. But the trail doesn't lead them very far: the last person to see Janey alive was first convicted and then acquitted of her murder, Peter Conway is in poor health and failing fast, and Kate and Tristan are increasingly unnerved by the motivations and intentions of their clients and their ties to the crime.
