A timeless message about the lonely journey and hardships of a young Jewish boy during World War II
The Painted Bird is a deeply dramatic story dealing with the immediate relationship between horror and cruelty on the one hand and innocence and love on the other. Although the work itself has caused and continues to cause strong controversy since its publication in 1965, it has received worldwide acclaim and many prestigious literary awards.
Since 2008, director Václav Marhoul has devoted all his efforts to the preparation of the film. A key impulse, motivation for further work and confirmation of the quality of the script was the award of the Special Mention of the Jury at the ScripTeast / Krzysztof Kieślowski Award at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2013.
This timeless message about the lonely journey and hardships of a young Jewish boy during World War II is even more relevant today. Recent events in Europe - the migration crisis, the spread of xenophobic prejudice and hatred without knowledge of the facts - have added to the urgency of his message.
