Night Story
The Name of the Rose, Silesian Style.
A historical novel that brings to life the true story of vampire trials in Silesia, near Opava. This time, the focus is not on witch trials but on accusations of vampirism.
The plot, based on real events, is reminiscent of Umberto Eco's book The Name of the Rose: Two monks travel to Svobodné Heřmanice in Silesia to investigate the mysterious phenomena that occurred in the village over several months in 1755, following the death of Marianna Saligerin. A gifted healer, she was persecuted everywhere as a witch and accused of being in league with the devil. The uneducated villagers come to believe that terrifying nocturnal apparitions, deadly vampires, are the cause of their ruin. Even Marianna herself appears to them after her death as if she were alive. The young and healthy are dying, and death is reaping a harvest of small children. Fear and anxiety grip the villages, and the Jesuits Martin and Ignác must get to the bottom of the mystery. Are the terrifying spectres really vampires, or is someone benefiting from spreading fear?
