The protagonist of the story is Věra Donátová, who has just graduated from law school. Her father decides to help her financially but gives her one condition. If she isn't successful within a year, she must marry the son of Consul Raboch. Věra agrees to her father's proposal and opens her own practice. However, clients are not exactly flocking to her. This leads her to meet a prisoner named Petr Kučera, also known as 'Tiger'. Věra manages to secure his release. She employs him in her office, and together they begin to explore the criminal underworld.

Her husband is often away from home, and to escape the greyness of her days, she starts helping out in her brother's flower shop, where she meets Richard Herbert. He completely sweeps her off her feet, and Helena decides to move into his studio flat. However, during a dinner at a luxurious restaurant, an unpleasant surprise awaits her. After filming this movie, Oldřich Nový was sent to a concentration camp, and Adina Mandlová never acted in another Czech film again.
