Petr Pavel has reached the highest military positions in the Czech Army - Chief of General Staff (2012-2015) and in NATO - Chairman of the Military Committee (2015-2018), where he was elected as the first representative of post-communist states.
He started his military career in 1975, when he entered the Military High School in Opava, then graduated from the Military College of Land Forces in Vyškov, Postgraduate studies in intelligence at the Military Academy in Brno, Staff College, Camberley, UK, Royal College of Defence Studies, London (2005) and King's College London, where he received his Master of Arts degree (M. A. ) in International Relations (2006). He gained command experience in the Special Purpose Unit in Prostějov, the Joint Force and as a representative of the Army of the Czech Republic in international institutions. He was a participant in foreign military missions and for his heroic deeds he received numerous awards from the Czech army and high foreign orders, including the highest awards of France and the USA.
Since his retirement at the end of 2018, he has been lecturing and promoting security, defence and foreign policy issues. During the coronavirus crisis, he founded the Stronger Together initiative. In his spare time he enjoys travelling, motorcycling, skiing, reading and photography. He is married for the second time, has three adult children, his wife Eva retired as a lieutenant colonel after a successful military career.
