On the shoulders of giants
The book deals with the phenomenon of the hero, their characteristics, values, and methods. It follows an analysis of the historical development of the heroic personality from antiquity to modern history, noting objective similarities with today's heroes. It presents the hero as a value model, identifying four fundamental and worthy qualities to follow: defiance and personal independence, the courage to take risks and change what is known, a self-transcending goal, and service to others.
Today's society also has its heroes who, whether quietly or loudly, in the background or at the forefront, support its fragile stability. What kind of people are they? What stories have they written, and why are they heroes? The author attempts to answer these key questions, skilfully building bridges between several scientific disciplines. He conducted five interviews with selected heroes: a soldier, a priest, a professor, a male doctor, and a female doctor, in order to analyse them.
