Onesto
A story about the Italian mountains and the people living through hard times within them
One rainy night, through the window of his house in the Cadore forests, the writer Francesco sees a man standing in the middle of a storm. He invites him in. This is how he meets old Guido, whose face is as wrinkled as the Dolomite cliffs and whose eyes are as blue as the mountain sky. Guido's attention is caught by a photograph of an unknown girl, which Francesco found under an overhang in the mountains.
Francesco begins to visit the lonely Guido, and the old man asks him to read from a bundle of ancient letters. Each one is dedicated to one of the surrounding mountains, and together they tell the story of the lives of brothers Onesto and Santa. They describe the seemingly simple stories of people who cling to life with all their might, just as larches dig their roots into the steepest rock faces. They tell of war, death, and love. But the story doesn't end with the last letter. Who had the cenotaph with the inscription “You are my mountains” built in the town? And who is the mysterious girl from the old photograph?

What they wrote about the book:
There are books that can quietly penetrate our inner selves, open doors that have long remained closed, and leave a mark on us, like a gentle breeze. Onesto by Francesco Vidotto is one of them. This novel does not merely tell a story; it invites the reader to see the world differently, to let go of things they cling to in life, and to find their own essence. In his poetic and visually vivid narrative, Vidotto manages to draw us into the forests of the Cadore region, into the mountains that whisper ancient stories of people living between memories and fate.

Vidotto is an author who makes no compromises. His descriptions of the environment are so colourful they take your breath away, yet he does not limit himself to merely depicting nature: his mastery lies in his ability to capture the wounded and exposed souls of his characters—each hides an uncomfortable truth, a secret, shame, a love that is both lifeblood and poison.
