Passionate Copying in Late Medieval Bohemia
The book provides a detailed case study of the Cross of Telč (1434-1504), illustrating the intricacies of manuscript culture in the second half of the 15th century. Kříž's biography is reconstructed on the basis of more than 150 colophons and notes; his role as author, translator, compiler, glossator and above all scribe is analysed. Kimberly Rivers' study of the Würzburg Franciscan scribe Johannes Sintram († 1450) is attached for comparison. The most striking feature of the studied late medieval manuscript culture is the unprecedented number of scribal paratexts (contents, indexes, explanatory notes, internal references, source identifications, etc. ), accompanied by an equally unprecedented number of errors, confusions, obscurities and incomprehensibilities. The first volume of the Prague Medieval Studies (PRAMS) edition.
