Perioperative medicine not only for general practitioners

A general practitioner commonly encounters patients who need a preoperative examination or who come to adjust chronic medication with the aim of optimizing their health before surgery. In addition, multimorbid patients are currently often indicated for surgery. After the procedure, these patients return to the office and the doctor must respond adequately to the specialist' s instructions and, if necessary, further adjust the medication according to the situation in the postoperative period. Most practitioners had last been in the operating room many years ago.

This book is a useful guide to perioperative medicine, especially for practitioners, but also for other doctors. It was written by experienced authors and experts in the field of anesthesiology. The book is practically and clearly organized.
It introduces readers to the basics of anesthesia and the selection of the appropriate type, premedication, and the demands for current necessary preoperative preparations. The book shows the organization of central operating rooms in large hospitals, contemporary surgery with an emphasis on new surgical techniques for the most common procedures, and sheds light on anesthesia practices in a broader context related to the patient' s health status before surgery.
The division of perioperative medicine issues according to individual fields and diseases (for example, thoracic and abdominal surgery, neurosurgery, cardiac surgery, anesthesia for urological procedures, eye surgeries, or burn patients) is very interesting. Separate chapters are devoted to chemotherapy and risk groups of patients, including children.
The new edition of the book is fully updated and includes new chapters that deal with, for example, chronic infectious diseases (HIV, infectious hepatitis) or the issue of psychiatric comorbidities.
The book is interesting primarily for general practitioners, but also for other non-surgical fields and for medical professionals.
