Photographers of memories
What happens when a person dies? Will he go to heaven, hell, or. somewhere else entirely? And what is the truth about the fact that at the moment of death our entire life is projected to us from beginning to end like a fast-paced film? Japanese author Sanaka Hiiragi brings a short story that may or may not provide answers to these questions.
In three chapters, we will look, together with three recently deceased people, into the environment of a photo gallery of human lives, which is both a photo studio and a photo laboratory, and which is managed by Mr. Hirasaka, a guide to the deceased.
Despite its limited scope, the chamber story presents a multitude of characters and a wide range of linguistic expression. We meet a retired kindergarten teacher and a quirky mafia boss, and Mr. Hirasaka' s task is to inform his diverse guests that they are dead and help them with the last task that awaits them before their final departure to the afterlife.
However, even the afterlife has its rules, and crossing boundaries is not unpunished. In the end, even Mr. Hirasaka has his own fate, his own past, and a single photograph.
