In the autumn of 1936, Karel Čapek returned from his travels in the Nordic countries and began to entertain the idea of writing a book to confess his love for his native land. He was preparing to write letters from home, to go through every village we didn't know yet. He talked about how now that he knows a piece of the hot and cold world, its beauties and shortcomings, he can compare and start writing his travelogue from home. The development of political events and his untimely death no longer allowed him to carry out his intention.
Pictures from Home contains shorter texts that were found in the author's estate in plates entitled "Minor Travels" from his wanderings in the Czech, Moravian and Slovak lands, supplemented by newspaper articles in the section "Prague Stops".
