Pilgrims: The Golden Age: 1983-1991 (2x CD) - CD

A full 30 years after the release of their debut album, Poutníci have arrived at a landmark compilation! Labelling the 1983–1991 seasons as the “golden era” in no way diminishes the band's previous or subsequent work, but it captures the extraordinary number of successful songs from that time.

Robert Křesťan put together this 2CD set as a combination of two complete albums and a huge number of bonus tracks. The albums Poutníci (1987) and Chromí koně (1990) are complemented by samples from their English-language LPs, their final farewell concert, and various rarities scattered across singles, compilations, and cassettes, bringing the total to almost fifty songs. Much of this has been unavailable for a very long time, and some of it is appearing in CD format for the very first time. The new remastering from the original tapes guarantees the best possible listening experience.

Here, tramping, folk, and country experience met, at just the right moment, with an unconventional set of instruments, combining guitars, banjos, and mandolins with saxophones, and blending venerable American folk songs with rock originals like Heavy Horses by the British band Jethro Tull. With their resulting modern bluegrass, Poutníci deservedly made a splash in the world, including a remarkable reception in the USA. At the core, however, are the original songs, of which Panenka is a cult classic, but just one example among dozens of other unforgettable tracks. Let's mention at least Pojďme se napít, Napsal jsem jméno svý na zdi, Až uslyším hvízdání, or Hotel Hillary to name a few. Křesťan's suggestive raspy voice and excellent lyrics, the valuable songwriting contributions of several band members, reliable multi-part harmonies, and the undeniable instrumental artistry of the up-to-eight-member group adorn this compilation, which is complemented by the musicians' memories and a set of archive photos in the booklet.

A grand journey with Poutníci!
