Porcelain from Dachau
Two lovers separated at the crossroads of history.
A sweeping epic story of love, betrayal and art, set across Europe from the Weimar Republic of the 1920s to the dark and glittering Berlin of the 1930s to 21st century America.
Germany, 1929. In dazzling Berlin, fate brings two young people together: Max, a Jewish architect, and Bettina, a beautiful and renowned avant-garde artist. However, the growing threat of Nazism soon casts a shadow over the visions of a bright future. It doesn' t take long for Max to be arrested and sent to the Dachau concentration camp, where only the beautiful porcelain figurines he makes there protect him from death. Meanwhile, Bettina does everything she can to free Max from the death camp. Every moment without him is suffering for her - and what if such moments fill the rest of her life?
America, 1993. Bettina' s daughter Clara sets off across the ocean to search for her origins and the identity of her father, whom her mother has always kept secret from her for unknown reasons. Together with Clara, we begin to piece together the fragments of an ancient story and are transported back to the past, where life hangs in the balance and death lurks everywhere.

They wrote about the book:
Sarah Freethy plays out a story that is beautiful, fragile, and brutal at the same time, like the splendor of porcelain contrasting with the omnipresent cruelty of war. In her debut as a writer, she places characters in real historical events that you will love for their nobility and whose story will remain in your heart and memory for a long time due to its timeless appeal.

An exceptional novel about broken hearts, the struggle for survival, and the search for hope in times of war.

Once I started reading Dachau Porcelain, I couldn' t put it down. Freethy has brilliantly interwoven two very different periods and conjured up a thrilling story about uncovering the past, full of heroism, betrayal, love and loss.
- Heather Morris, writer

Sarah Freethy' s book exists on two levels: On the surface, we have a story about a woman' s search for an ancient inheritance, from which she wants to learn the truth about her parents, but deeper in the past lies a tragic story about beauty dying in the omnipresent brutality, and about love in times of hatred, when two young artists fight for their lives and each other during the Nazi reign of terror in Germany in the 1940s. Expect excitement, expect surprising twists and turns – and prepare a good supply of tissues for the finale.
