Portishead are a trip hop band from Bristol, UK, named after the small town of Portishead, which lies around 13km west of Bristol.
Multi-instrumentalist Geoff Barrow and singer Beth Gibbons formed the band in 1991.
Barrow had already worked with other trip hop artists, including Massive Attack and Tricky, and decided to name his new project after his home town.
