“(pronounced l? h-' nérd ' skin-' nérd) “is the debut studio album of the American southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, released nine years after the band was founded on August 13, 1973.
Lynyrd Skynyrd is an American band playing the so-called southern rock. The student band was founded in the summer of 1964 in Jacksonville, Florida, then still under the name “My Backyard“ by a group of teenagers consisting of: Ronnie Van Zant (vocals), Allen Collins (guitar), Gary Rossington (guitar), Larry Junstrom (bass) and Bob Burns (drums). The inspiration for their music production was the beat bands british invasion such as Free, The Yardbirds, The Rolling Stones and The Beatles, as well as the influences of other music genres such as southern blues and country & western.
The band changed its name to “One Percent“ or “Noble Five“. Over time, the name settled on “Leonard Skinnerd“ after Leonard Skinner, a physical education teacher and basketball coach for group members at Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville, who bullied Rossington and Burns because they didn' t want to cut their hair. Their school did not allow her hair to touch the school uniform. From this name then emerged the final, typically southern version in the shape of “Lynyrd Skynyrd“.
The group became known to the public mainly in the 1970s. Their most famous songs were “Free Bird“ and “Sweet Home Alabama“. “Free Bird“ is third in Guitar World' s list of the best guitar solos.
