Reconstruction

What else can be used to excuse the sins that others have committed against her? And where to start listing hers?

"I was born when I was nine years, ten months and seven days old," begins the story of Eliška, the heroine of Reconstruction. She lives her childhood in a dark villa with a reclusive aunt and no one cares about her fate. Or so it seems, judging by the cautious reactions of everyone around.
Eliska was born of murder. Her mother killed her younger brother and then herself. No suicide note was found, and those who saw the mother that tragic day noticed nothing striking. Eliška grows up in a ten-year void, and when she grows up, she decides to find answers to increasingly insistent questions. What actually happened? Why did my mother do it? And why didn't she take her with her...
In her third novel, the successful novelist Viktoria Hanišová writes about the attraction of empty places, about the captivation of falling into darkness. Sometimes all it takes is a little, like trying to find a balance in life - and suddenly one is swinging over the precipice.
