Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the colour-divided society of the future. Like the other Reds, he works all day long and believes he is making the surface of Mars habitable for future generations. But Darrow and his people have been deceived - humanity has been on the surface for a very long time, there are great cities and vast parks spread across the planet, and the Reds are nothing but slaves to the decadent ruling class.
