Reminiscences

A mixture of spy games with detective undertones

It is a principle in criminalistics that the sooner detectives get to the corpse, the better their chances of catching the killer. In other words, the fresher the case, the more leads to compare, the more eyewitnesses, the better the starting point for investigation. Ironically, in the fall of 2008, the detectives of the One Hundred and Forty-One office were presented with the oldest case they had ever encountered.
Fifty-six years ago, detectives were asked by the leadership to investigate the possibility of charging the then border guards with murder in cases of shootings of fleeing emigrants at the border with Austria. To Krauz's great surprise, there were many fleeing dissatisfied with the socialist system, and unfortunately, there were more dead than common sense would admit.
To test whether it is possible to investigate something after so long, they chose one case and started to investigate. The murder of five emigrants - including two children - on barbed wire near Petržalka in 1952 did not resonate in society at the time, because it was not allowed to be written about, but after years of unfreedom it is allowed to write and even ask questions. Krauz decides to test how far the new questions in the old case would take him. Questions, but mainly answers. What he finds is an incredible blend of spy games with detective undertones, the essence of suffering, blood, hatred and bigotry.
